Sarah Anastasia Brody (Biography)

Entrepreneur, Artist, Writer, Designer, Experience Designer, Visual Designer, Interaction Designer, Typographer, and Filmmaker: I've been working in the field of design for over ten years—including the years of my design studies at the Art Center College of Design between 1992 and 1996—and have become an expert in the fields of Visual Design, Interaction Design, and Online and Interactive Media, with extensive, professional experience.

I see the role of the designer as the role of the communicator who primarily bridges the gaps between business strategies and people, technology and design, usefulness and desirability. I have worked in many different media and authored several articles on multimedia, computers, and information. My experience spans print design, editorial design, product design, film, CD-ROM development, online services, and applications development.

So, what do I do to make a living?

Current: Apple Computer
I am working at Apple as an Applications Designer. I can’t talk much about my current projects…but Apple is a fun and exciting place to work and play…

Things I did in earlier lives:

1996-1998 Brody, Inc.
As Creative Director I spearheaded the development and execution of comprehensive CD-ROM and Web design solutions for a variety of prestigious national and international clients, including the Austrian Government, the European Commission, Accenture (Andersen Consulting) and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra among other projects.

1998-2000 AlcheMe, Inc.
As Internet entrepreneur I cofounded AlcheMe, Inc. a design and user centric “B2B2C” beside Infomediary, in order to give businesses are more efficient way reaching their customers and users a personalized yet protected personal space on the Web that integrates content, tools and shopping in a meaningful and contextual way. But the market was favorable to build an Internet venture, so the rest is history.

I speak at conferences, lecture about design, and write about visual design, communication and other matters.

2000-2001 Cooper Interaction Design
As a member of the design management team, I participated in Cooper’s strategic planning and was heading Cooper’s Visual Design Department. At Cooper I have spent a lot of time building online solutions for businesses that enhance and evolve their online branding, and building customer-centered online experiences for companies seeking to expand their contact and services in this medium.

Client engagements include: AT&T “OneComm” Web project, Hewlett-Packard “Jornada” series: PDA / PIM application interaction design, bitmap level visual design and GUI style guide creation; Informatica: “Analytics Delivery Platform” interaction design, visual design and Web style guide creation for business data warehousing software; MDVista: visual design consulting; WebGain: interaction and visual design for application installer.

Born and raised in Central Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria) I studied classical voice and piano in Munich, Germany before I moved to the United States in the ’90s to study communication design, digital Media and film at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After living and working for one year in Austria in 1996, I decided to move back to my beloved and adopted home country, California.

Play:

When not working, or strolling with Florian through one of the Wildlife Preserves in the Bay Area, I enjoy architecture (particularly working on the interior design of our home Villa dei Miracoli), gardening (Villa dei Miracoli’s Mediterranean garden), cooking (kosher and not so kosher recipes including Vegetarian, Indian and Italian cuisine), reading (fiction and nonfiction books and magazines) and watching (independent) movies.

I live with Florian and our two Abyssinian cats in the Evergreen Valley near San Jose.
